Preparation for Holiday on Road in Fort Collins, CO

How to Prepare for Holiday Stress … On the Road

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you might be looking forward to seeing family or other loved ones for the holiday. However, the joyful anticipation could easily be wiped away by a stressful road trip if you don’t plan well. Here are a few tips to make it a safe and enjoyable ride.

  • Check the Forecast
    • Even if it means changing your departure time or schedule a bit, it’s best to drive in clearer weather. If driving in bad weather is likely, make sure to check that all fluids are filled and everything is working properly before you leave. Having an emergency kit handy is also important.
  • Clean out the Car
    • If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the car make sure it’s clean and comfortable. There shouldn’t be unnecessary items at people’s feet; keep a plastic bag handy for garbage and pack light enough so everything fits in the trunk or back of the vehicle. The last thing you want to do is drive with a bag on your lap during a long car ride.
  • Plan Your Entertainment
    • This is especially important if you have little ones on a long car ride. Make sure electronics have fresh batteries; keep a cozy blanket and/or pillow in arm’s reach for naps, snacks and anything else that will help the hours go by. And don’t forget yourself. Have some tunes, podcasts or audio books on hand to keep your mind at ease.
  • Make Pit Stops
    • Besides stopping for gas and food, don’t forget to enjoy the scenery while you’re traveling on the road. Take advantage of stops that provide a pretty photo opp. That way your time on the road becomes a part of the whole experience.
  • Be Aware of How You’re Feeling
    • Even if the roads are less congested after dinner, driving after a big turkey dinner and dessert is probably not the best time to get behind the wheel. You’ll most likely feel very drowsy. Better to hang out a while longer, even for the night, and take off when you are well rested and hydrated.
