Romantic Rides Across Colorado

Scenic Drives for the Perfect Getaway

Colorado’s majestic mountain peaks, lakes and scenery provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic drive. If you’re looking for something different to do or for a romantic getaway for a future celebration, here are a few ideas for a scenic drive that will result in a wonderful memory. Plus, we’re sharing a few tips to get your vehicle ready before you take off!

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

Black Hawk to Estes Park

This first one is pretty convenient for Fort Collins residents. It’s not a long ride at 55 miles, but it’s packed with stunning visuals, including Longs Peak, the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. This ride is extra special in the fall when the landscape is filled with hues of gold and orange. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, Nederland is a small, historic town that is a nice place to stop.

San Juan Skyway

Durango to Telluride via Ouray

Looping through the San Juan Mountains, this 236-mile stretch is one of the most remarkable drives in Colorado. You’ll see towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and charming towns. If you have the time, you can choose to make a stop in Ouray to soak in the hot springs or spend a cozy evening in beautiful Telluride.

Rim Rock Drive

Grand Junction to Fruita

Nestled within Colorado National Monument, Rim Rock Drive offers a memorable journey through towering red rock and mesas that look more like they belong in Arizona than Colorado. Couples can enjoy serene trails like the Canyon Rim or Window Rock. If you can arrange it, visit at sunrise or sunset when the rocks are enhanced with natural golden light. Keep in mind there is a fee for vehicles to enter Colorado National Monument.

Trail Ridge Road

Estes Park to Grand Lake

Save this one for the summer as it’s closed for most of the winter. The road is usually open between late May and mid-October. We wanted to include it because it’s another one convenient to Fort Collins. Known as the ‘highway to the sky,’ Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park reaches elevations of over 12,000 feet! Stop for a romantic picnic near Bear Lake before taking in the breathtaking views of the Continental Divide.

Before you go

The last thing you want on a romantic getaway is for something to go wrong with your vehicle. Here’s a quick checklist to consider before you take off.

  • Inspect tires for proper tread and inflation for safe handling on windy roads.
  • Top off fluids, including brake and window washer fluid.
  • Test the battery, especially during colder months.
  • Check the brakes. Mountain roads can be hard on brakes.
  • Pack an emergency kit with blankets, water, snacks and a flashlight.
