Making Sure Your Vehicle is Ready for the Long Haul
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year. If you’re planning on hitting the road this Thanksgiving, make sure to prepare your vehicle for the trip, too. Whether you’re heading across town or embarking on a multi-state journey, here are a few tips to ensure your vehicle is ready for the road.
Top Off Fluids
Gas isn’t the only fluid you need to fill before taking off. If you haven’t changed the oil in the last 3,000 miles or so, you’ll need to get that done before your trip. Additionally, check levels for the antifreeze, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid and transmission fluid. Top off any of the ones that seem low.
While you’re on the road keep the gas tank more than half full. When temperatures are really cold condensation can build up in an almost-empty tank, leaving you with the possibility of freezing fuel lines.
Test Electricals and Wipers
In November, you might be driving in low light or inclement weather so make sure your headlights and signals are working. Replace any burnt-out bulbs. If your windshield wipers are leaving streaks and not performing well, it’s time to replace them too.
Check the Battery
There’s nothing worse than a battery dying when you’re far from home. Cold weather can affect battery performance so test it to make sure it’s holding a charge and clean up any corrosion.
Try the Heat and Defrost Systems
These can affect your visibility while driving just as much as your windshield wipers. Prevent foggy windows by making sure your defrosters are working on both the front and back windows. You’ll also appreciate the effective heat while driving in the colder weather!
