Tips for getting your vehicle ready for the colder months
As the temperatures start to drop and we swap our hiking boots for snow boots, it’s important to ensure your vehicle is prepared to handle the challenges of winter. Winterizing your vehicle not only helps prevent unexpected breakdowns but also keeps you safe on the road. Here are some key tips to help you get your vehicle ready for the colder months ahead.
Check the Tires
Cold weather can cause tire pressure to drop, reducing traction on icy or snowy roads. Make sure to regularly check the pressure of each tire. To help your vehicle grip and better handle icy surfaces, consider switching to snow tires. Finally, check tire tread depth for wear and tear. Worn-out tires lose traction, increasing the risk of skidding.
Inspect Your AWD/4WD System
If your vehicle has an all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) system, it’s important to make sure it’s functioning properly before winter begins. All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive can enhance your safety and performance when driving in wet, slippery weather. Engage the system to ensure it switches between modes smoothly and that all components are working as intended. You can also do a test drive, driving in a tight circle. If the system is engaged the vehicle will feel tight as you’re turning. If you’re unsure, you can have a professional check it for you.
Check the Antifreeze
Antifreeze – also referred to as coolant – is critical for your vehicle’s engine in winter. It prevents the engine from freezing in cold temperatures. Most vehicles require a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water but check the manual for recommendations. Regularly make sure the coolant is close to or at the “full” line.
Keep Your Vehicle in a Garage or Under Cover
Storing your car in a garage or under a cover during winter can help protect it from nature’s wet elements. If available, park in a garage. If you don’t have a garage or carport, use a car cover. A high-quality cover can protect your vehicle from frost and help prevent the buildup of snow and ice on the windshield and roof.\
Protect the Paint
Salted roads can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s undercarriage. Get your vehicle undercoated or apply a rust-proofing spray to help prevent corrosion. Wash your vehicle regularly to remove salt buildup, especially from the underbody and wheel wells.
