Guide for Road Trip with Dog by Houska Automotive in Fort Collins, CO

Hitting the Road with Your Dog in the Car

Much like a child, there is a lot to think about when traveling with a dog. Traveling by car is probably the easiest and least stressful way to travel, however, a long road trip can bring on some anxiety for you and your dog. Here are some tips to consider before hitting the road with your canine companion to make sure everyone stays happy and protected.

  • Before even leaving, make sure to have vaccinations up to date and any IDs, medications and medical records with you. It’s also advised to find out where the nearest vet is in case of an emergency.
  • A crate that is secured in the vehicle is the safest way for your dog to travel in the car. It will prevent him from roaming around and becoming a distraction to the driver. Just make sure the crate is large enough for the dog to move around in. The crate will also come in handy to keep the dog contained if you’re staying at a hotel or friend’s house.
  • If your dog does get anxious in long car rides or if thunderstorms are expected during your ride which can also cause anxiety, bring along something familiar from home, like his favorite chew toy.
  • Make frequent rest stops–ideally every three hours. During each break, walk the dog and give him a small meal.
  • Prepare for your destination. If you’re going camping, bring a pair of tweezers and cleansing soap to remove ticks and clean the area. If you are staying at a hotel, consider bringing baking soda to help remove accidental pee stains.

Now have fun! Having the dog with you can make a road trip that much more enjoyable. However, preparation is always key and more than likely, if something does happen, you’ll be so glad you took the extra time to be ready.
