Breaking Bad Driving Habits by Houska Automotive in Fort Collins, CO

Time to Break These Bad Driving Habits

We all know we shouldn’t be texting while driving. Distractions put us and other drivers on the road in danger. Some bad driving habits are not only risky, but they can do serious damage to the vehicle. If you’re guilty of any of these bad habits, now’s the time to break them. At Houska, we recommend starting practicing ways that will keep you and others safe on the road.

  1. Speeding Over Speed Bumps: Going over a speed bump can compromise your vehicle’s alignment or damage the undercarriage. Signs alerting that speed bumps are present on the road provide ample time to slow down and take the bumps easily and cautiously.
  2. Leaving Gas Tank Near Empty: Even if you think you have 50 miles left in the tank, it’s never a good idea to drive with a near empty tank. Besides the fact that you risk running out of gas, if you get caught in a serious traffic jam, it can cause the fuel pump to burn out.
  3. Riding the Brakes: Many people tend to do this on the parkway. Riding the brakes is when you keep your foot on the brake pedal for a prolonged period of time. Doing so can lead to the brakes overheating and cause excessive wear to the pads and rotors. If that happens, the brakes will not be as effective, making it more difficult to come to a full stop.
  4. Not Using the Blinker: Signaling is an important form of communication with other drivers while you’re on the road. Many drivers feel it isn’t necessary when there aren’t too many people around them. Even if someone isn’t directly behind you, it’s always a good idea to communicate your next move to others.
  5. Tailgating: Driving behind a slow driver can be frustrating, but it’s not worth risking a collision if they suddenly stop short. Slow down–mentally and physically–and you’ll be sure to get to your destination safely.
