Tips for New Drivers

Learning to drive can be a very exciting experience – with a drivers’ license comes newfound freedom and responsibility! However, we also recognize that learning to drive can be an anxiety-inducing ordeal. As a newly licensed driver, it can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking to be on the road the first few times.

The team at Houska Automotive cares deeply for the safety of our customers. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of learning safe driving habits – doing so not only ensures your safety, but the safety of others on the road.

Whether you’ve been behind the wheel for 50 years or 5 days, we hope these tips are helpful for you as you seek to safely navigate the streets!

Avoid distractions while you drive

Staying calm and focused is one of the best habits you can have as a driver, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned driver. Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents – phones, music, food, and even other passengers can all provide distractions to drivers. Learn to keep your eyes – and mind – on the road at all times.

Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you

If you hope to avoid accidents, be sure to always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Doing so ensures that you will have enough time to react to sudden stops or hazards in the road.

Always wear your seatbelt

Not only is it illegal to remain unbuckled, but it’s incredibly dangerous! Wearing a seatbelt is perhaps the easiest way to protect yourself in the case of an accident. Be sure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts when your vehicle is in motion, as well.

Know how to handle emergencies

Emergencies can happen to anyone, and being prepared in the case of an emergency will help to ensure your safety. Be sure to keep a first aid kit, water bottles, jumper cables, and a spare tire in your vehicle at all times. Write down the numbers of a reliable towing service and automotive repair shop (like Houska Automotive at 970-482-0156), and keep the numbers in your glove compartment at all times. It’s also a good idea to add at least one into your phone’s address book.

Perform regular maintenance on your vehicle

Performing regular maintenance on your vehicle lessens the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns or issues. We generally recommend that you follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, and are equipped to go over all those items.

The friendly team at Houska Automotive is here to ensure that all drivers have safe experiences on the road. Make Houska Automotive your go-to automotive repair shop, and be sure to give us a call at (970) 821-8654 if your vehicle is in need of maintenance.
