Somehow these long summer nights are quickly coming to an end. Whether your child is still in high school and just has to drive down the street or is heading across the country to attend an out-of-state university, you want them to be safe, especially in their car. Here is a list of a few things to double check on the car before they make that mad dash to AP Lit at 8 a.m. on Monday.
- Check all the Fluids: Oil, coolant and transmission, power steering fluid, even wiper fluid! Make sure the car has all fluids at the proper level and that the oil has been changed. If you’re unsure, consult the owner’s manual about levels each fluid should be at.
- Check the Lights: Ensure that all bulbs are working, including brake lights, headlights, and then maybe even polish them up! Learn how to polish your own headlights here. While you’re checking visibility, make sure the wipers are effective as well. There’s nothing worse than trying to drive through pouring rain with wipers that don’t work!
- Check the Tires: It’s possible that there is a nail stuck in the tire, just waiting until your child is down the road to cause problems for him. Also, check the tire pressure and wear. Replace any tires that show too much wear, and remember to rotate them every 6,000-8,000 miles.
- Check the Battery: Tools such as a voltmeter can determine how well the car’s battery is performing. Remember, it’s normal to replace a battery every three years or so. If the battery is more than five years old, it could start to cause real inconvenience. Even with a new battery, make sure your child’s car is equipped with jumper cables, just in case. Teach them how to jump their car here.
