National Preparedness Month

Be ready with emergency kits and maintenance.

Life can throw unexpected challenges our way at any time, especially on the road. From abrupt weather changes to sudden breakdowns, being prepared can save you from a major emergency.

September is National Preparedness Month. Use this as a time to make sure you and your vehicle are ready for whatever you may encounter on the road. A well-stocked emergency kit and routine maintenance are two simple measures you can take to help keep you and your passengers safe.

Stock an Emergency Kit

Every vehicle should have an emergency kit. If possible, your kit should be updated for the season. At the very least, your emergency kit should include:

  • First Aid Items: Bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers are just a few ideas
  • Jumper Cables: In case of a dead battery, they’ll get you moving again!
  • Flashlight and extra batteries: In case you get stuck at night
  • Reflective Triangles: Also very helpful at night so other drivers see you on the road
  • Blankets: Especially important in the colder months
  • Water and Non-perishable Snacks: These will help if you’re stranded for a while
  • Spare Tire: Make sure your vehicle has one, especially before a long road trip

Keep Up with Preventative Maintenance

While an emergency kit prepares you for the unexpected, preventative maintenance helps you avoid breakdowns in the first place. A few routine checks can go a long way toward peace of mind on the road.

  • Check Your Tires: Inspect tread depth and tire pressure regularly. Proper inflation improves fuel efficiency and handling and can help you avoid dangerous blowouts.
  • Test Your Battery: Batteries are more likely to fail in extreme heat or cold. Have yours tested and replace it if needed.
  • Inspect Belts and Hoses: Worn or cracked belts can snap without warning, leaving you stranded.
  • Top Off Fluids: Make sure oil, coolant, brake, and windshield washer fluids are at proper levels.
  • Replace Wiper Blades: Good visibility is crucial, especially during sudden storms.
  • Keep Up with Scheduled Maintenance: Oil changes, brake checks, and routine inspections help prevent surprises down the line.
