7 Reasons to Be in Love with FoCo

We love where we live and work! And that goes beyond the fact that Fort Collins gets over 300 days of sunshine every year, and that the city is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. There is so much more to this great city that brings quality of life and enjoyment to the people that live here. Houska is so proud to be a part of this community.

Fort Collins Loves Local: Much of what gives Fort Collins its character is the fact that many of our businesses are locally owned. Unique boutiques, farmers markets and breweries are greatly supported by the community. Houska is proud to be a locally owned business since 1952!

It’s the Fourth Happiest City in America: In 2017, National Geographic, Gallup and New York Times author, Dan Buettner, conducted a study to find the 25 happiest cities in America. The study measured everything from eating healthy to financial security to civic engagement. The results showed Fort Collins to be #4 out of 190 metropolitan areas across the country!

Green is a Favorite Cause: The City puts great resources in providing us with “green” transportation options. Trails are consistently being extended; there’s the Fort Collins Bike Share program and soon–electric scooters–to help get us around. Schools encourage composting, while many residents use solar panels to power their electricity.  We also do our best to be green. All of our courtesy shuttle vehicles are hybrid low emission vehicles, our shops are heated with waste oil and we also have our own bank of solar panels. Learn more about our green efforts here.

Summer is as Much Fun as Winter: Yes, Colorado is known for its great skiing, but there is lots to do in the warm months in Fort Collins. Rafting or tubing down the Poudre River should be on everyone’s summer bucket list. If boating is more your speed, Horsetooth provides 25 miles of beautiful scenery. Plus, we have tons of trails for hiking and mountain biking, too.

There is Still a Drive-in Movie Theater: It’s nostalgic and a great place for a date or group outing. Get there early to get a good spot. Bring a football to toss around while you wait for the sun to set.

Free Entertainment: It’s rare that anything is free anymore–especially live entertainment. But Fort Collins has lots of it!  Starting in May it seems like there is a free festival every weekend. The Lagoon Summer Concert Series is a family-friendly event that hosts a popular band every Wednesday night for eight weeks. There also are also a number of free community events like storytime, parades and speakers.

Kids and Pets Are Welcome:  Businesses make it easy for parents of kids and fur babies to get out of the house and be able to enjoy the city. Places like Odell’s let parents enjoy a beer while their toddlers and dogs are playing in the grass. Restaurants with outdoor seating often accommodate dogs with a bowl of water outside, so mom and dad can eat in peace. Finally, getting some sun is easy to do with a number of easy trails for kids, while also welcoming leashed dogs for a beautiful hike.
