5 Maintenance Must-Dos
Colorado winters are no joke, especially in Northern Colorado, where snowstorms and deep cold temperatures can put drivers and vehicles to the test. Preparing your vehicle for winter is critical to keep both safe. Before the snow starts coming down, make sure your vehicle is ready to handle the season. Here are a few maintenance to-dos to consider before the season starts.
Upgrade to Snow Tires
All-season tires might work in mild conditions, but when it comes to icy Northern Colorado roads, you should consider putting snow tires on your vehicle. Snow tires are designed with a softer rubber specifically for the cold weather and have deeper tread to provide a better grip on the road and stopping power.
Replace Windshield Wipers
Driving in a snowstorm with streaky, worn-out wipers can be dangerous. Replace wipers with a winter version that have a sturdier frame and a rubber shell that prevents buildup from snow and ice.
Test the Battery
Cold winter temperatures can reduce your battery’s power, even to the point where it may be harder to start the engine. Get your battery tested to make sure it’s in good condition. If not, replace it immediately.
Keep Fluids & Antifreeze Levels Full
Antifreeze is critical in preventing the engine from freezing. The ratio for the coolant mixture in Colorado is usually a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. While you’re checking the antifreeze, you should also check on the oil, brake fluid, washer fluid and transmission fluid levels.
Don’t Forget the Interior
It’s important to protect the inside of your vehicle too during the winter. With the snow, salt and mud that inevitably makes its way into your vehicle, the interior also takes a beating. Invest in some good quality rubber mats to protect your vehicle’s carpeting. Waterproof seat covers that are easy to wash will protect the seats from wet coats and gear. It’s smart to keep a small brush in the vehicle to clean up salt and dried up dirt before they set in.
