National Safety Month

Staying Safe Behind the Wheel

June is National Safety Month – a great reminder to prioritize safety in every part of our lives, including when we’re on the road. Whether you’re heading out for a quick errand or taking off for a summer road trip, practicing car safety is critical. Here are some reminders of good safety habits to practice this month and beyond.

Snap on Your Seat Belt

Seat belts have been saving lives since they became a required feature in vehicles in 1966. Putting on your seat belt matters. Statistics show that seat belts reduce the risk of death and the risk of injury. They keep you in place, preventing you from being tossed around or even ejected from a vehicle in an accident. Seat belts are designed to spread the force of a crash across the strongest parts of your body—your hips and chest–reducing the severity of injuries.

Airbags are Hidden Guardians

Front, side and even knee airbags are now common in newer models, offering layered protection in the event of a crash. Airbags are ready to inflate instantly during a collision to cushion your body from the impact. They are not a substitute for seat belts, so make sure to continue wearing your seat belt.

Maintenance is Safety

While seat belts and airbags are crucial, regular maintenance will help prevent breakdowns and accidents while on the road. Regular maintenance should include checking your tires. Proper tire pressure and tread depth help maintain control and reduce the risk of a blowout. Also make sure to get your oil changed, and brakes and fluids inspected.

Use Common Sense

Don’t get behind the wheel if you’re overly tired, under the influence or emotionally distracted. Take a minute to make smart decisions and make sure you’re able to focus on the road.
