What Mechanics Notice First About a Car Before Opening the Hood

You can learn a lot about a vehicle before you ever pop the hood. After years of working on cars, mechanics develop an eye for the little things that can tell them how a vehicle is running, how it has been maintained, and where a potential problem might be hiding.

We asked the Houska Automotive team what they notice first when a vehicle comes into the shop. Here are 10 things that often catch a mechanic’s attention first:

  1. Tire condition
Tread depth, uneven wear, and tire pressure can tell us a lot about the vehicle and its alignment.
  2. Brake wear
We listen for unusual noises and look for signs that the brakes may need attention.
  3. Warning lights
A dashboard light can be an early clue that something needs to be checked.
  4. Fluid leaks
Spots or puddles underneath a vehicle can point to a leaking fluid and help identify where a problem may be starting.
  5. Engine sounds
Unusual noises, vibrations, or changes in the way an engine sounds can be important clues.
  6. Exhaust
The color, smell, and amount of exhaust can sometimes indicate an issue that needs further inspection.
  7. Vehicle stance
If a vehicle sits unevenly, it could point to suspension or tire concerns.
  8. Windshield and wipers
Cracks, chips, worn wipers, and poor visibility are easy to overlook but important for safe driving.
  9. Battery condition
Corrosion, loose connections, or other visible signs can give us an early indication of battery or charging system concerns.
  10. Overall condition
A quick walk around the vehicle gives a mechanic a chance to notice signs of wear, previous repairs, or anything that looks out of the ordinary.

None of these observations automatically means there is a problem. They simply give our technicians clues about where to look more closely.

At Houska Automotive, we believe good service starts with paying attention. Sometimes the smallest detail can help us catch a problem before it becomes a bigger one.
