Tips for a Safe Journey on the Road
Travel is a big part of the holiday season. That could mean a drive to a family gathering or a longer road trip for a winter getaway. With so many people on the road, and unpredictable winter weather, driving during the holiday season can be challenging as well as exciting. Take these few extra steps to keep your holiday travel safe and less stressful.
Plan Your Route
GPS is convenient, but it’s smart not to completely rely on it. Traffic and weather can change pretty quickly while on the road. Map out alternative routes. If you’re traveling long distance, identify rest stops, gas stations or charging stations along the way so you don’t get stranded.
Check Colorado Chain Laws
If your holiday plans take you through the Colorado mountains, you should familiarize yourself with Colorado’s chain laws. During winter storms you may need to equip your vehicle with proper traction, like snow tires or tire chains. You can check COtrip.org for chain laws and to sign up for travel alerts.
Prepare for the Unexpected
Traveling in the winter can be beautiful with the snow-capped mountains under the glistening sun, but it’s important to be ready for the unexpected. Here are a few things you should keep in your vehicle in case of an emergency:
- Ice scraper
- Shovel
- Blanket, gloves and hat
- Sand or kitty litter for tire traction
- Flashlight with batteries
Schedule a Vehicle Inspection
Taking the time to get your vehicle checked out can save you a lot of headaches later. Have your vehicle looked at by a professional. Brakes, tires, battery, fluids, wipers and lights should all be inspected before your road travels.
The holidays should only be about joy and creating memories–not dealing with any car trouble. Come into Houska Automotive to have your vehicle inspected before heading out for the holidays. We’re also happy to share additional tips to make your travels safe and enjoyable.
